Synopsis by Alice Day
Cycles of famine and drought create constant hardship in parts of Africa, and people must struggle to find enough food in order to survive. The harvest from crops can be meager, but in Kenya, Burkina Faso, and Zimbabwe, many women attempt to supplement their families' rations with the results from their farming. In spite of a desperate need, these women receive little or no assistance from the men in the villages, who find agricultural labor beneath their dignity. With These Hands won a Gold Apple award at the National Educational Film Festival in 1988.
