Synopsis by Bhob Stewart
Israeli-Dutch director Danniel Danniel filmed this Dutch drama set in Eastern Europe of the '70s. When art student Maria (Marketa Hrubesova) takes a romantic interest in bad cop Karol (Petr Motloch), her university friends shun her -- not unwise given Karol's duty to inform and torture "subversives." Maria and Karol marry, and later Maria flees to the Netherlands. The scene flashes forward to 1989, a time when their child Nina (Juliana Johanidesova) expresses her discontent by experimenting with drugs and masochism. The film finds a parallel between Nina's lifestyle and her father's profession. Filmed with Czech and Dutch dialogue. Shown at the 1998 Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
