Synopsis by Alice Day
Portions of Russia's turbulent history are recounted in Wide Country, Vol. 2: Siberia Between Revolution and Gulag, starting with the Russo-Japanese War. After defeats at the hands of the Japanese, the Revolution of 1905 occurred, and in a short time, the first World War would bring fresh losses and economic peril. With the emergence of Lenin, Russian citizens began to feel some optimism, but Stalin's arrival brought an end to feeble hopes. His gulags were labor camps in the frozen north, where millions of Russian citizens lost their lives, accused of meaningless infractions.
