Synopsis by Alice Day

The history of the diverse, rugged individuals who live in Siberia is documented in this series of three programs. Its location in the forbidding northern latitudes proved to be a supreme challenge, but adventurers and fur trappers found many rewards in its frozen landscape. Siberia's explorers included Yermak, a Cossack chieftain, and Vitus J. Bering, a Danish officer and explorer in the fleet of Peter the Great. Despite the harshness of the region, there are natural wonders such as Lake Baikal, the Ural Mountains, and vast expanses of taiga, as seen in Wide Country, Vol. 1: The Conquest of Siberia.
