Synopsis by Mark Deming

A young couple discovers just how dramatically their lives will change when they start a family in this documentary from Chinese filmmakers Guo Jing and Ke Dingding. Jun and Long are a pair of educators who lave been living together for several years; Long is a lecturer who is working on his Ph.D. in philosophy, while Jun teaches English. When Jun learns that she's pregnant, they quickly get married and begin making plans for the arrival of their child. But along with the usual worries that come with expecting a baby, both Jun and Long find nearly everything in their life is being turned upside down; Jun is excited about being a mother, but she's also worried it could put an end to her career, while Long isn't happy about having to take time away from his work. Both Jun and Long are disappointed with the news that they're having a girl, knowing all too well the limitations placed on women in Chinese society. After the baby is born, Jun's parents arrive to help, but their presence causes as many problems as it solves. And Jun and Long find themselves in a nearly constant balancing act between their desire to live in the 21st Century and the often outdated traditions and mores of Chinese society. When My Child Is Born was an official selection at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival.
