Review by Jason Clark

A multicultural L.A. Thanksgiving tale where the food is more interesting than the characters, this second film by director Gurinder Chadha is akin to an overwrought after-school special, albeit one dealing with lesbians, politics, and guns. A large, talented cast is wasted in this trite and ultimately silly effort; only Kyra Sedgwick and a surprisingly sedate Lainie Kazan make a credible impression and rise above the film's myriad cultural stereotypes. Cooking's recurrent theme of race relations in America leaves little more than a sour aftertaste; one gets the impression that Chadha just wanted to present a lot of mouth-watering dishes and an annoying cast of characters with whom most people wouldn't want share an elevator, let alone a holiday. The film opened the 2000 Sundance Film Festival to a mostly lukewarm response, and was buried by its more daring competition.
