Synopsis by Hal Erickson
What Happened Next Year is one of a handful of Syrian films made available to American audiences. Najah Safkouni plays Mounir, who returns to his home in Syria after studying music abroad. Mounir hopes to create a Syrian national symphony, but his plans run into several roadblocks, not least of which is deep-rooted bureaucracy. He also must contend with a love-life fraught with peril. The film builds carefully to a climax that is satisfactory to Mounir, if not quite a full realization of his ambitions.
