Experience Jules Massanet's operatic adaptation of Goethe's morbid tale as it was meant to be seen in this release of a performance that utilizes a working score held by Italian baritone Mattia Battistini to recreate Massanet's vision as accurately as possible. Featuring longtime Werther baritone champion Thomas Hampson and Susan Graham in leading roles, this 2004 performance conducted by Michel Plasson takes its cue from a 1999 rendition of the opera originally performed at the New York Metropolitan while bringing it to an appreciate audience on the Châtelet stage.
