This documentary alternates footage shot in the 1930s by an anthropologist showing how everyday life was lived among the Navajo with footage covering the contemporary everyday life of the Navajo Burnside family. Among the issues raised: the diminished use of the Navajo language even on the reservation, the decline of native crafts, and creeping modernization. Among the issues which are not discussed: the disruption of Navajo life by the Black Mesa coal-mining operation -- which was agreed to by what is widely regarded as a corrupt tribal government -- and similar massive outside interventions.
