Synopsis by Hal Erickson
It should come as no surprise that the phenomenally successful American quiz show The Weakest Link was based on an even more popular British original. Created by Fintan Coyle and Cathy Dunning, the series brought together a number of contestants who were divided into teams and obliged to answer general-knowledge questions. The series' gimmick was manifested in its cruelty: Each time a contestant answered incorrectly, he or she was mercilessly insulted and browbeaten by the moderator, the infamous Anne Robinson. Eventually, the other contestants would vote the most conspicuous losers "off the island," as it were, whereupon the redoubtable Ms. Robinson would zero in on the soon-to-be-ejectees and utter the series' world-famous catchphrase, "You are the weakest link. G'bye." The British version of The Weakest Link first aired in August 2000, the daytime edition running on BBC2 and the prime-time edition telecast by BBC1.
