Synopsis by Jason Buchanan
Directors Karen Shakhnazarov and Alexander Gornovsky team to adapt legendary author Anton Chekhov's haunting short story detailing a respected doctor's slow descent into madness. Far on the outskirts of Moscow, Dr. Ragin presides over a mental hospital where thoughtful discussion is in very short supply. His only intellectual stimulation comes from his rich philosophical debates with Gromov, a highly intelligent yet deeply disturbed patient at the asylum. In time, however, Gromov's madness begins to rub off on Dr. Ragin. A bold new take on a literary classic, Ward No. 6 updates the story's original 19th Century setting to present day, and intercuts conversations with actual Moscow mental patients with Chekhov's story to striking effect.
