Synopsis by Janiss Garza
Darcy Cole (Billie Burke) is a frumpy young woman who lives with a couple of roommates in Washington Square. When her friends become engaged, it finally dawns on Darcy that she needs to do something about her appearance if she wants to catch a man. So she goes to a hairdresser, gets some stylish new clothes and exercises at a gym. All of it works; men flock around her. But apparently they aren't good enough, because Darcy flashes a photograph of an English lord (it's actually someone performing in a amateur play) and claims that she is engaged to him. Complications arise from this lie and she needs to dig him up. She finds him, wearing the same outfit, when he's trying to escape a process server. Scenarist Clara Beranger pulled out a dusty, forgotten novel by Samuel Hopkins Adams and wrote this farce for Burke.
