Synopsis by Nathan Southern

This biographical documentary profiles one of history's most acclaimed artists, Dutchman Vincent Van Gogh (1853-90), on an unusually intimate level. Placing a slightly greater emphasis on the person than on the artwork, it traces the tumultuous and ultimately tragic events of Van Gogh's life - from his childhood in North Brabant, Holland, through his apprenticeship in Nuenen, Holland, his meteoric development as a Parisian artist, the peak of his career in Southern France, and eventually, his suicide in Auvers at age 37, following excruciating bouts of mental illness. The program depicts many of Van Gogh's paintings onscreen, features numerous excerpts from his letters, and transports viewers to the many of the locales where the artist lived and worked.
