Episode two (volume one) of a 13-part documentary series produced for public television by WGBH Boston, American Experience: Vietnam - The First Vietnam War is the precursor to the Vietnam War, examining the Franco-Viet Minh conflict in which the French fought to hold on to their colonization of Southeast Asia, including the territory of Vietnam, against Ho Chi Minh's guerrilla movement. With the Viet Minh earning sufficient popularity among the Vietnamese people, the United States in 1950, out of fear of communist advances throughout Asia, provided military and economic aid to the French. After eight years of fighting, in 1954, the French outpost of Die Bien Phu fell to Viet Minh forces and in the subsequent negotiations at Geneva, Switzerland, the French had to withdraw their troops and the division of North and South Vietnam was drawn.
