One of the most prominent titles to explore the anime trope of "magical girlfriends," this six-episode OVA is about a young man named Yohta who is heartbroken over his unrequited love for a girl named Moemi. Lonely and sad, he rents an adult video featuring a girl called Ai. When he plays the tape, however, Ai reaches out of the television and into his life, crawling right into bed with him that night and telling him to "cheer up." While plenty of ecchi and sexually based comedy follows, Video Girl Ai eventually turns down a more serious path, exploring the confusing worlds of love and devotion to ideals vs. reality, as well as the popular Japanese theme that any being, artificial or organic, can develop consciousness and spirituality through the love of others.
