When they were boys, Hapa and Vähy pledged themselves to eternal friendship. However, despite sincere efforts on Hapa's part to sustain the relationship, he has a much harder time as the years go by and Hapa becomes a college graduate while Vähy's life becomes one endless drunken carouse. They part ways when, while visiting his old friend, Vähy passes out and his current girlfriend seduces Hapa. Eventually, Hapa hears that his old pal has been killed in a brawl. The story opens while he is on his way to visit Vähy's grave at night.
