Synopsis by Brian Whitener
In Vertical Roll, video artist Joan Jonas performs as a series of alter egos in front of the camera, moving her body to create a progression of abstract images. Jonas took these images and recorded them off of a video monitor, adjusting the monitor's vertical hold. By playing with the hold, Jonas causes the image to "roll" which foregrounds the apparatus of the image. It also allowed Jonas to watch herself as she performed adjusting her movements based on the image -- thereby creating a human machine circuit.
