Synopsis by Nathan Southern

A structure that embodied the apotheosis of architect Richard J. Neutra's work, the VDL Research House went up in 1932. It brought together several distinct phases of Neutra's career, including an early phase that celebrated thin surfaces, bands of windows, and small-sized silver and white volumes; a late 1930s and early 1940s fascination with outdoor living, with oversized windows and overhangs, exemplified by the Garden House; and a post-war fixation with environmental design. The release VDL Research House: Richard Neutra's Studio and Residence carries viewers on a detailed tour of this facility and evaluates the way in which many of its structural and aesthetic aspects can be viewed as commentaries on various phases of his career.
