Even though her novels seem rather quaint now, author Elinor Glyn was considered quite racy and sophisticated in her day. In fact, although this particular story was toned down for the screen, it was still thought too steamy for family audiences. Katherine Bush (Catherine Calvert) looks down on her commonplace, hard-working family. She believes she is meant for a better life and runs off with Lord Algernon Fitz-Rufus (John Goldsworthy). But she realizes after a few days that her affair isn't going to bring her any closer to society's upper strata, so she then becomes a social secretary to Lady Garribardine (Mathilda Brundage). There she meets a duke, who is in the House of Lords, and he proposes marriage. Katherine, however, is compelled to tell him of her prior indiscretion. At first he leaves, but then he comes back and forgives her. Thus she earns the status she was after.
