Synopsis by Augustine Chay
Writer-director Mike Leigh’s historical drama film revolves around the Peterloo Massacre of 1819. A peaceful protest for Parliamentary reform and extended voting rights led to state violence when the militia unexpectedly charged into the crowd with deadly sabres. Widespread outrage over the event eventually led to major reforms and a new impetus for national journalism.
