Synopsis by Mark Deming

A woman has plenty of loose ends to tie up before she can make a bid for freedom in this drama from Romania. Matilda (Ana Ularu) has spent the past two years in prison as part of a five-year sentence she was given for a crime she did not commit. Matilda's mother has died, and she's given a 24-hour pass to attend the funeral, but Matilda has no intention of going back to prison. She's struck a deal with a truck driver to give her a ride to a coastal town where she can hop a freighter to freedom. However, little goes as planned over the course of the day; Paul (Mimi Branescu), her former boyfriend, goes back on his deal to lend her the money she'll need, and her brother Andrei (Andi Vasluianu), and sister in law Lavinia (Ioana Flora) make it clear they don't want to help her or give her shelter. But these problems are small stuff compared to Matilda's discovery that Paul has put their eight-year-old son Toma (Timotei Duma) in a home for orphaned children. Periferic (aka Outbound) was the first feature film from director Bogdan George Apetri.
