Synopsis by Mark Deming

Three men vying for the same job end up chasing the same girl in this comedy-drama from noted Japanese director Yasujiro Shimazu. Jobs are in short supply in Tokyo in 1937, and three men in their twenties -- Shin Miki (Shin Saburi), Ken Taniyama (Ken Uehara) and Shuji Kamura (Shuji Sano) -- are all vying for entry-level business position with a large textile firm. Shin, Ken and Shuji each land jobs, and find themselves in fierce competition to climb the corporate ladder. At the same time, the three rivals all meet Reiko Kageyama (Mieko Takamine), whose father owns the company; the three men all fall for her and struggle to win her hand, though they have very different personal styles (one is from the city, another from a rural community, and the third comes from the suburbs), and one is already pledged to marry his girlfriend. Konyaku Sanbagarasu (aka The Trio's Engagement) was the film that propelled Saburi, Uehara and Sano to stardom after its release in 1937, and the three actors would become the Shochiku studio's three greatest stars of the era.
