Synopsis by Mark Deming

Can a woman live an independent life in a land where she's still considered a second-class citizen? Ruba (Nusrat Imrose Tisha) is a woman in her mid-twenties who lives with her boyfriend, Munna (Mosharraf Karim), despite the disapproval of his father. When Munna ends up in prison, his father kicks Ruba out of their flat; unhappy living with her mother, Ruba decides to find a place of her own. But in Bangladesh, this is easier said than done -- most landlords believe it's inappropriate to rent to a single woman, and the few who will believe women who live on their own are by nature promiscuous and demand sex as part of the transaction. Launching a career is not much easier, though in time Ruba lucks into a job editing copy. Ruba also happens to renew her childhood friendship with Topu (Rashed Uddin Ahmed Topu), who helps her find a place of her own, but as their friendship segues into romance and Topu's career in music begins to take off, Ruba wonders if she's compromised the independence she sought and often talks about her life with the 13-year-old version of her self (Lekha Haque). Directed by Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, Third Person Singular Number was an official selection at the 2010 Rotterdam International Film Festival.
