Synopsis by Mark Deming

A man convicted of a crime he didn't commit wonders what direction he should take with his life after he's released in this drama from Iraq, set in the Forties and Fifties. Juamer (Nezar Salami) and his wife are expecting a baby, and when she goes into labor, Juamer dashes out to summon the midwife. Juamer runs into the street as police are clashing with Kurdish protesters; believed to be one of the demonstrators, Juamer is arrested and spends ten years in prison, where he is often tortured for a political stand he did not make. While behind bars, Juamer tries to find out what became of his wife and child, to little avail. When he's finally set free, Juamer sets out to find out what happened to his loved ones, and wonders if he should throw in his lot with the Kurds, having come to believe in the virtue of their cause. Jani Girl was based on a celebrated novel by Kurdish author Ibrahim Ahmad.
