Synopsis by Mark Deming

A man who searches for lost items manages to find and then lose love in this drama with comic undertones. Daniel (Mads Ousdal) is a psychologist in his late twenties who still lives with his domineering mother (Hildegun Riise). He and his best friend Ronny (Harald Eia) share an unusual hobby -- they like to take their metal detectors to beaches or the countryside and look for valuables. One day, they find a woman's bracelet inscribed with the name "Janne." Daniel is able to track down the owner, and discovers she's a very attractive young woman (Ingjerd Egeberg); he becomes infatuated with Janne, and in time they enter into a serious relationship, leading Daniel to finally move out on his own. Daniel and Ronny are then approached by a woman whose husband has gone missing; the woman is convinced her husband is dead, and she believes they can use their metal-detecting equipment to find his body. By ugly coincidence, as Daniel looks for the missing man, Janne disappears, and as he tries to find out what has become of her, he learns she had been hiding some secrets he never wanted to know. The first feature from director Pål Jackman, Detektor was a major critical success in its native Norway.
