Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

This is a rare East German documentary about the rock music scene in that country just before unification. It was made with great difficulty, because the filmmakers were unable to obtain the necessary technical equipment and many improvisations were required. This documentary chronicles the frustration of the youths involved in the rock scene, and shows the subtle and not-so-subtle ways they register their protest agains the regimented wholesomeness advocated by the communist regime. One highlight of the film, besides the performances of the groups, is its use (in places) of an obscure Berlinese slang dialect. The film also documents the daily lives of the performers.
