Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
Spurred to do so by her son's quest to understand how she can be such an awful mother, Lily (Plamenta Getova) gives Malina (Petar Popyordanov) the details about her past which show why it was impossible for her to be a good mother to him. In the darkest days of the totalitarian communist regime in Bulgaria, Lily had a boyfriend who was drafted into the army whom she never saw again. Soon afterwards, she was raped by the son of an important government official, and was then forced to marry the miscreant so that the child of that rape would be legitimate. As soon as possible, her mother-in-law (Paraskeva Djukelova) had her imprisoned in an asylum so that she would have no contact with the family or her child. Eventually Lily escapes her confinement, but by then her son Malina has spent his entire childhood being bounced from place to place, and he has conceived an unreasoning hatred of his mother.
