Hiroyuki Oki has the distinction for both being one of Japan's most daring and innovative directors and being one of its the very few openly gay filmmakers. In Kokoro no Naka, Oki fuses documentary elements with that fiction filmmaking to such a point that its difficult to distinguish one from the other. The film is both the story of two men falling in love with each other on a beach, and a faithful document to the filmmaking process.
