Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
Varya (Lubov Krasavina) is a pregnant woman of some spirit and imagination who is trapped in a rural existence in modern Russia. Even with the reforms under Gorbachev, life in the farmlands is basically unchanged. Varya's husband is not very bright, and her mother-in-law is predictably aggressive and difficult. Not only that, but even if she relished her husband's company (she doesn't) she shares their tiny cottage not only with her mother in law but with her husband's brother. The only escape she finds is in her imagination which also provides her with horrifying nightmares to contemplate.
