Pepo was the first full-length feature produced in Soviet Armenia. Essentially a travelogue, the film details the day-to-day life of an Armenian youth named Pepo. The story comes to a conclusion of sorts when Pepo falls in love. The direction by Bek-Nazarov leaves several plot points dangling at fade-out time, while the English subtitles do little to clarify the narrative for non-Armenian viewers. The most impressive aspect of Pepo is not that it was made well, but that it was made at all; this, after all, was only 12 years after the Ottoman Empire's genocidal efforts to wipe the Armenian race off the face of the earth.
