Director and male lead Philippe Harel has successfully pulled off a risky technique in the way in which he filmed this love story between Muriel (Isabelle Carré), a twentysomething young woman, and a 39-year-old married man -- Harel focuses in great detail on the woman's face and gestures and tells the story from the literal point of view -- of vision -- of the man. There are only two brief scenes in which the face of the man is shown in a mirror. Little white lies and clandestine meetings build into a full-fledged affair in which a movement of the lips, a glance in a certain direction speak as loudly as a written sign. The woman interacts with the camera and with her lover in such a way that neither exist without her, and what seems to be at first her reaction to the man she comes to love begins to evolve into her reaction to the timidity of the man -- a subtle but telling difference. Isabelle Carré plays the young woman with an intensity and emotional range that works well with the unblinking eye of the camera.
