Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
Caudillo literally means "Boss," and was one of the many titles bestowed on Francisco Franco, who emerged as the sole dictator of Spain following the Civil War there. This documentary film collage attempts to convey images and feelings from the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), accompanied by songs from that conflict sung by Franz Heller, Pete Seeger and Charles Heden. This film marks the first time a Spanish documentary sympathetic to the anti-Franco and Republican forces has been compiled. It is likely to be deeply moving for those who were involved or have intimate knowledge of the events, people and places of that time. However, the film is arranged in an apparently haphazard fashion, with little explanatory material, and may be somewhat confusing for most. Nonetheless, it contains important archival footage, and the music alone clearly conveys many of the feelings which motivated that dispute.
