Pierre (Pierre Clementi), a well-meaning journalist, becomes involved with a Tunisian immigrant worker when, after seeing the man rob a woman's purse, he doesn't turn him in, even after he discovers who he is and where he lives. When the robber commits suicide, he feels responsible somehow, and journeys to Tunis to see the man's family. Unable to communicate easily, he cannot bring himself to tell them that the man is dead.
