Synopsis by Brian Whitener
The Other Francisco was the first film in a trilogy of films made by Sergio Giral, a black Cuban, about the history of slavery in Cuba. The movie is built around a critique of 19th century abolitionist Anselmo Suarez y Romero's novel, Francisco. Giral takes Suarez y Romero's novel to task for its sentimental romanticization of the violent realities of everyday plantation life. While Giral deconstructs the narrative structures that underpin Suarez y Romero's humanistic philosophy, he cuts in segments of a historical exposé on the real conditions of slavery in Cuba.
