The Turning Point is the last of three classic propaganda efforts by Soviet filmmaker Friedrich Ermler (the first two were Counterplan and The Great Citizen). Told in semidocumentary fashion, the film details the strategy drawn up of the generals of the Red Army to defend Stalingrad from the invading Nazis. Real-life generals Muravyev, Vinogradov, Krivenko and Panteleyev are portrayed with conviction and credibility by Mikhail Derzhavin, Pavel Andrievsky, Andrei Abrkosov and Alexei Zrazhevksy. Despite initials clashes of ego, the four generals finally join together in perfect harmony to smash the Nazi juggernaut. Like most Russian films of the 1940s, The Turning Point opened in the U.S. at the Stanley Theater in New York.
