Based on a story by Kristofer Janson, Praestaenkan tells the story of Sofren (Einar Ród), a poor, rural divinity student trying to become the parson of a small Norwegian village, and his betrothed, Mari (Greta Almroth). He competes successfully for the post against two wealthier and better educated rivals, one of whom is among the most boring sermonizers ever encountered and the other a glutonous buffoon (the latter part of his persona inadvertently helped by Sofren), and he wins an offer of the job with his oratory -- but to take the job, he must marry Dame Margarete (Hildur Carlberg), the widow of his deceased predecessor. He intends to keep his betrothed Mari and get the parson's job.
