Synopsis by Janiss Garza

In spite of Elaine Hammerstein's theatrical credentials -- she was the daughter of producer Arthur Hammerstein and her cousin was Oscar Hammerstein II -- she was never more than a second string star in routine dramas. This so-so picture was even more routine than most. Society girl Evelyn Whitney (Hammerstein) decides to try a hand at earning her own living on New York's Lower East Side. With just 13 dollars in her pocket and a new name -- Molly Malone -- she gets work at a factory, then as a waitress. She fails at both jobs and then becomes a singer at a cafe, where she ultimately makes good. Her biggest fan is Larry Marshall (Matt Moore), an ex-gang leader who is trying to go straight. A romance develops between them, which angers Marshall's former sweetheart, Stella Warren (Ellen Cassity), who also performs at the cafe. An enemy of Marshall's leaves a knife on Stella's dressing table and she attacks Evelyn with it. Marshall finds the two girls struggling and shoots Stella dead. Evelyn dashes back to her uptown home, unaware that Marshall has been arrested and is on trial for Stella's murder. When she finds out that the police are looking for "Molly Malone," she rushes to testify in Marshall's favor. Marshall is acquitted, and he weds Evelyn.
