Unternchen Schlafsaek (Operation Sleeping Bag) was inspired by Hans Nogly's novel of the same name. Paul Eilinger stars as a WWII German officer, ordered to go to Berlin for an undisclosed assignment in 1944. Through a series of bureaucratic boo-boos, Eilinger is held indefinitely from active service without the knowledge of the High Command. He uses his lay-off time to evacuate his men from the treacherous Russian front, and to establish a phony military outfit far removed from the "shooting war." In this way, he hopes to spare himself and his men from any further combat. Eventually, the ruse is discovered and Eilinger is sentenced to death, but fate once more intervenes.
