Synopsis by Alice Day

The first official steam locomotive journey on the Union Pacific line went from Denver, CO, to Laramie, WY, returning via Sherman Hill in 1953. The train was powered by a coal-burning Challenger outfitted with "elephant ear" smoke deflectors. In honor of the 40th anniversary of the event, another Challenger, wearing elephant ears, made the same trip with 500 people onboard. Union Pacific's 40th Anniversary Steam Excursion documents the occasion, and also presents interviews with passengers from the 1953 trip.
