Synopsis by Tracie Cooper

This episode of TLC's Understanding series provides information on one of the most mysterious topics studied by mankind -- the vast contents of the universe. Narrated by Candice Bergen, the production features insight from celebrated astronomers and astrophysicists surrounding what exists inside and out of the Milky Way. By means of graphic models and advanced computer animations, some of the most complex theories involving the universe -- its age, its contents, and its origins, among others -- are put into terms non-rocket scientists can understand. Also featured are close-ups of the sun, nebulas, supernovas, and more, courtesy of the Hubble Space Telescope. Satellite readings, meanwhile, allow viewers to listen to echoes believed to have been created by the Big Bang, while a strange "red shift" promotes debate over the age of the universe. Lastly, viewers are treated to a tour of the set of Star Trek: Voyager; a series well known for pondering whether black holes are, in fact, shortcuts to other worlds.
