Synopsis by Mark Deming

In this satirical comedy-drama, a group of thieves looking to move into a more profitable variety of crime set their sights on kidnapping, deciding to abduct Tolin (Emilio Guerrero), the star of a popular television comedy series. While the crooks try to negotiate Tolin's safe return with his family and business partners, one of the kidnappers, Emilio (Victor Hugo Arana), finds himself pondering the fact that he's always wanted to break into show business. Emilio decides to offer Tolin a deal -- he'll help him escape to freedom in exchange for a part on his TV show. Tolin refuses, but Emilio has now decided it's his destiny to be a TV star, and he starts romancing Dianita (Ana Serradilla), a beautiful but brainless sexpot who's a regular on Tolin's show, in hopes that she might be more willing to help him break into the big time. Un Mundo Raro was the first feature from director Armando Casas, who previously helmed several student films while attending Mexico's National University.
