Synopsis by Alice Day
Powerful earthquakes can cause a tremendous amount of property damage when they occur, and the toll in human lives can be catastrophic. When they do strike, buildings, railroad tracks, and streets buckle, and fires add to the destruction. Despite advances in instrumentation, the science of earthquake prediction is still far from perfect. In Ultrascience 2: Earthquake!, the focus is on Tokyo, potential site of a large quake that experts predict will wreak unimaginable ruin. At this point, "earthquake-proof" structures can be built, but it is questionable if they will withstand enormous quakes.
