Synopsis by Steve Blackburn
Although cowboys are often the heroes of Hollywood Westerns, it was the military that tamed "the West" for U.S. expansion. Through its war with Mexico and against the tribes native to the continent, the American military pushed the frontier farther west and south, gaining territory for pioneers and protecting the settlers. The Civil War, though not mainly fought in the west, helped determine the nature of America's "Manifest Destiny." This video program tells the story of the winning of the West as viewed by the soldiers.
