Harvard graduate Phil Burton (E. Forrest Taylor) goes prospecting in the West and becomes the companion of a dying miner. The miner bequeaths his claim to Burton, and it turns out to be worth a lot of money. He returns East to sell his holdings to a mining syndicate. But the syndicate's head, Lord Devlin (Harry Von Meter), has discovered that the miner's niece, Effie March (Helen Rosson), is actually entitled to the mine. Effie, who is unsuccessfully pursuing an art career in New York, also happens to be a friend of Burton's. Devlin tricks Effie into giving him power of attorney, but Burton, who has fallen in love with Devlin's sister-in-law, Jean Bradford (Lizette Thorne), discovers the plot. He gets the mine back for Effie, and she agrees to split ownership with him. Effie heads back West to the mine, while Burton wins Jean.
