Synopsis by Hal Erickson
An extremely popular BBC2 informational series ever since its debut in 1978, Top Gear offered weekly reviews of the newest automobiles and the latest advances in motorized transportation. Since the network accepted no advertising, the series' various hosts could not only afford to be objective in recommending one auto "make" over another, but could also be hilariously insulting when they downgraded those cars which did not appeal to them. In later years, the series broadened its reach with an internet consumer-shopping guide. The series was relaunched in 2002 with a quirkier style featuring broacaster/journalist Jeremy Clarkson as host, and a weekly panel of guest "experts."
