Newlands is assumed dead, and Beatrice nurses one of the other travelers, mine owner Steven Crawford (Landers Stevens), back to health. But Newlands isn't dead after all and he goes to work at Crawford's mine. Because he believes that Beatrice is happy with Crawford, he decides to stay away from her. He is able to hold off a strike at the mine, and all his hard work redeems him. Beatrice has actually kept Crawford at arm's length this whole time, so she and Newlands are eventually reunited.
