Synopsis by Steve Blackburn

The Napa Valley Farmhouse Renovation by the This Old House PBS series involves updating and expanding the kitchen of a 1906 Victorian hip-roofed farmhouse to take advantage of the spectacular views of the Wine Country. In This Old House: Napa Valley, Pt. 4, host Steve Thomas and master carpenter Norm Abram visit Trefethen Vineyards, which boasts Napa Valley's oldest wooden, gravity-fed winery. Back at the farmhouse site, plumber George Biter shows his rough work, including ABS and cast iron piping. General contractor Jim Nolan explains how the large laminated-veneer lumber beam was hoisted into place, spanning the new kitchen and precluding the need for a mid-room support post. The crew installs new French doors into the west wall of the old dining room, while Steve Thomas visits the Palo Alto factory, where the energy-efficient plastic film inside the doors' glazing is made. Back on site, the team examines foundation plantings that threaten the house. The program concludes with a contrasting look at the house owner's small vineyard in comparison to Opus One, a joint venture between two of the most powerful families in winemaking: California's Robert Mondavi family and the Rothschild family of France.
