Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter
In part one of a four-part series, the This Old House crew takes the Steamship Authority vessel to Nantucket Island, where the latest house restoration project awaits. Although there is much work to be done, the crew still finds time for surf casting, lobstering, and touring the historic district. Attention then turns to new homeowners Kathy and Craig McGraw Bentley, and their house. The exterior changes have to be approved by the island's Historic District Commission, and the viewer goes to meet with them. The house is then gutted, as it needs new wiring and plumbing, insulation, floors, and windows. A former owner stops by and the couple learns that the house once had a Victorian doorway, since replaced by a Colonial door. An exciting discovery is made in the crawlspace: fine old double doors, complete with etched glass. Mixing mortar and installing joists comes next. A longtime resident leads a tour of the village of Sconset, with its charming and historic cottages.
