Writer-director Todd Haynes’ documentary explores how the beatnik culture of the ‘60s produced the avant-garde achievements of American rock and roll band The Velvet Underground. Drawing from rare photographs, home movies, archival footage, and interviews with surviving members John Cale and Maureen Tucker, it traverses the subcultural sites and countercultural forces that inspired their singular body of work.
