Synopsis by Hal Erickson

This Argentine "docudrama" was filmed entirely on location in the mountainous Quebrada de Humahuaca regions. The main story involves the romance between an archaeologist and a schoolteacher; these worthies are portrayed by professional actors, while the rest of the cast consists of local amateurs. The film's title alludes to the tribal religious customs depicted herein. One of these, a traditional funeral dance, is absolutely fascinating. Though on a technical level Strange Gods is somewhat ragged, the film was deemed worthy of entry in the 1958 Berlin Film Festival.
